DHAKA – Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh after nearly two decades of self-imposed exile in London. He arrived to a hero’s welcome. The 60-year-old could now win one of the country’s most pivotal elections. Rahman’s parents previously dominated Bangladeshi politics, with his father serving as president and his mother as prime minister. His return follows a youth-driven uprising that ousted long-time premier Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

Rahman pledged to recalibrate Bangladesh’s international partnerships to attract investment without favoring any single country. He also vowed to expand financial aid for poor families. He plans to reduce reliance on garment exports and promote industries like toys and leather. Additionally, he proposed a two-term, 10-year limit for prime ministers to prevent autocratic rule. Rahman emphasizes peace, stability, and pragmatic governance.

Since returning, Rahman has adopted an understated style, avoiding inflammatory rhetoric. He projects himself as a statesman beyond family politics. He has emphasized reconciliation and restoring “people’s ownership of the state.” BNP supporters have welcomed this new approach, hoping for a fresh start. Even his family cat, Jebu, has gone viral on social media, helping soften his image.

Under Hasina’s government, Rahman faced multiple corruption cases and life sentences in absentia. He denied all allegations, calling them politically motivated. Following Hasina’s ouster, he has been acquitted in all cases. His return marks a shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Party insiders say he is directly overseeing strategy, candidate selection, and alliances.

Rahman stresses that restoring democracy is his top priority. He believes accountability and prosperity require practicing democratic principles. He plans to rebuild institutions and empower citizens. The BNP aims to recover from past marginalization under Hasina’s rule. Rahman’s leadership could redefine Bangladesh’s political future if polls hold.
